Welcome to the St. Paul’s Episcopal Friends of Music Gvuild Concert Series!
Our series includes world class organist, John Walker, our choir-in-residence Voces Solis, Dr. Shelley Hanmo Qian, piano artist concert, Lee Robinson Sacred Jazz Music Concert, Katy Williams vocal recital, Zaffiro Trio chamber music concert, piano for 4 hands dynamic duo- Bryan Sable and Ellen Fast , Alexandra Loutsion, Operatic Artist and to finish off the season, Pittsburgh’s fastest growing new music ensemble, NAT 28 in an all Steve Reich concert.
In addition to soliciting donations as Patrons, this year we offer you an opportunity to underwrite a concert to honor loved ones or in a particular thanksgiving. Dr. John Walker and NAT 28 concerts have been funded. All others are open for your support. Contact Doug Starr for each concert’s varying underwriting costs.

Voces Solis Concerts

Summer Singers the temperature is rising, and that can only mean one thing--it’s time for the fifth annual performance by Pittsburgh’s own Summer Singers! Join us as we celebrate five years of choral excellence with a diverse program featuring the music of Abbie Betinis, Sergei Rachmaninov, Hugo Distler, Imant Raminsh, Moses Hogan, and more.

Voces Solis presents “it is life that has no limits: Reflections on Death and Life” featuring Tomas Luis de Victoria’s inimitable Officium defunctorum a 6, it promises to be an evening of reflection and peace. as we remember those we’ve lost, and as we look forward with hope
Sunday, January 22, 2017, 7 pm
Ring in 2017 with Voces Solis presenting “despite the snow: Music for Midwinter” on January 22. We’ll keep the cold at bay with a program featuring Morten Lauridsen’s masterwork for choir and piano, Mid Winter Songs as well as music by our 2017 Composer in Residence, Davis Good.
Zaffiro Trio

The Zaffiro trio,Tina Faigen (piano), Mary Beth Malek (clarinet) and Paula Tuttle (cello) perform the Brahms clarinet trio and the Beethoven clarinet trio. These trios bring a unique quality of sound, expertise and sensitivity that audiences adore.

Shelley, an award winning piano artist and current teaching assistant at Indiana University Jacobs School performs an outstanding recital of works by Schubert, Ravel, Gubaidulina, and Liszt. She also premieres two preludes and fugues by our music director, Doug Starr. On Saturday afternoon, Oct. 2nd, Shelley will present a master class for young pianists. Lee Robinson and friends in a sacred jazz music concert

Jazz saxophonist and Jazz Artist in Residence, Lee Robinson and his jazz ensemble, ISKA will join with vocalist, Valerie Vernon in spirituals and sacred jazz music by Duke Ellington, Pat Metheny, and others.

South Hills Multi-Organist Recital

South Hills Organists will be playing their favorite organ works at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Each recitalist will play 10-15 minutes on our wonderful Schantz organ. This year’s program features St. Paul’s organists Alice Lee, Bryan Sable and Doug Starr. Guest organists include Chaz Bowers, Anne Smith and David Schaap.

Dr. John Walker Weekend Artist in Residence & Organ Recital

Organ Artist and past President of the American Guild of Organists, John Walker will be in residence to accompany St. Paul’s Chancel Choir in a performance of F. J. Haydn’s Missa Brevis in Bb in morning liturgy and present a master- works recital later in the afternoon on St. Paul’s glorious 65- rank Schantz pipe organ.

Alexandra Loutsion, Mezzo-SopranoAnd Operatic Artist in Recital

In a special fundraising performance before her starring role in Puccini’s Turandot with Pittsburgh Opera, Alexandra will perform treasures of 19th c. opera and art song accompanied parishioner and piano artist, Susan Woodard.

Pittsburgh young artists in a recital of new music

Young Pittsburgh artists and recent graduates of Carnegie Mellon University School of Music will present an all Steve Reich Concert including New York Counterpoint for Clarinet, Vermont Counterpoint for Flute, Cello Counterpoint, and Double Sextet, a piece for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, percussion, and tape

My love affair with Robert Page started in August of 1989 when I attended Carnegie Mellon University. He shaped so many lives with his passion for music and culture.
