The Second Annual St. Paul’s Summer Music Quiz
Many young talented musicians have shared and even learned some of their musical craft here at St. Paul’s and then gone into the professional music world.
Question: Who performed often as a child at St. Paul’s, in Mt. Lebanon School District strings program and in the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony? When asked by a distinguished and amazed cello teacher at the summer Interlochen Arts Camp “where did you learn to play Basso Continuo (a distinct Baroque era style of bass line accompanying), she delightfully answered, “In church!”
Hint: Her father is completing his fiftieth year as the Pittsburgh Symphony's co-principal and E-flat clarinetist and her mother is an elementary band teacher in the Mt. Lebanon School District.
Answer: Alexandra (Allie) Thompson, cellist PIttsburgh Symphony.
After graduating college in 2011 from the Cleveland Institute of Music, she began a three-year fellowship with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Florida. Previous to that, her summers were spent at Spoleto Festival USA, Tanglewood Music Center, National Repertory Orchestra, International Festival-Institute at Roundtop, Credo Chamber Music and Interlochen Arts Camp. Prior to joining the Pittsburgh Symphony, she performed as a substitute cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood.
Her primary teacher was Pittsburgh symphony principal cellist Anne Martindale Williams. She was a winner of the Duquesne Young Artist and Pittsburgh Concert Society Young Artist Competitions. So, it all began in the St. Paul’s family. Allie currently resides in Dormant with her husband, tuba player Joshua Lee, and their Australian shepherd, Fuzz. Allie will be here as cellist in as many musical presentations as often as we are able to bring her home!
