Please Consider Running for a Diocesan Position
Each year there are a variety of positions filled by election at the Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh. Many positions are held by members of St. Paul’s. This year’s Convention will be held at St. Paul’s on November 4 and 5, and it would be great to have a number of our parishioners on the ballot! St. Paul’s is a significant leader in the Diocese, and we need your help to assure that this tradition continues. Service in these positions is valuable and rewarding.
Here is a brief run-down on available positions:
- The Standing Committee: this is one of the three governing bodies of the Diocese; the Standing Committee serves as a Council of Advice to the Bishop, and becomes the Ecclesiastical Authority of the Diocese in the absence of a Bishop. There is one lay opening and one clergy opening, both for a four-year term. For more information, speak with current member John Adams, or former member Jon Delano
- The Board of Trustees: this is another one of the three governing bodies; the Board of Trustees manages the financial and property assets of the Diocese. There are two lay openings, both for a three-year term. For more information, speak with former member Bob Johnston.
- Committee on Constitution and Canons: this group is responsible for preparing amendments or additions to the Constitution and Canons of the Diocese as necessary. There is one lay opening and one clergy opening, both for a three-year term. For more information, speak with current members Ansley Westbrook or Michelle Boomgard, or former member Lou Hays.
- Cathedral Chapter: this group oversees the mission of the Cathedral in relationship to the entire Diocese. There is one lay opening and one clergy opening, both for three-year terms. For more information, speak with current members Michele Baum, Doug Starr, or Garrett Yates, or former member Michelle Boomgaard.
- Disciplinary Board: this group is available if needed to participate in disciplinary actions against clergy accused of violating the disciplinary canon of the Episcopal Church. There is one lay opening and two clergy openings, both for three-year terms. For more information, speak with Andy Roman, Diocesan Chancellor.
- Commission on Ministry: this group assists the Bishop in discerning the call of individuals to lay or ordained ministry and oversees the process leading to ordination. One member, either lay or ordained, is to be elected for a three-year term. For more information, speak with the Chair of the Commission, Lou Hays, or with current member Michelle Boomgaard.
- Deputies to General Convention: these individuals will serve as Deputies or Alternates to the next General Convention of the Episcopal Church, to be held in Austin, Texas in July, 2018. There are four clergy openings and four lay openings, and those receiving fewer votes may serve as Alternate Deputies. For more information, speak with current Deputy Jon Delano.
