Music Notes - July 17
The Spiritual sung by Chris Thompson at the 10:45 am prelude is a setting by Roland Hayes, one of America’s first African American concerts artists. A tenor and composer, Roland was raised in rural Georgia but ascended to international fame in the 1930s securing professional management with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston where he worked as a voice teacher and composer. The spiritual that Chris sings was published in a collection of spirituals in 1948 entitled, My Songs: Aframerican Religious Folk Songs Arranged and Interpreted. They are enriched by his harmonic depth and finding and prolonging the musical high points in phrases.
In July, beautiful special music at the prelude, anthems and communion will be offered by our talented parish musicians: Katy and Rich Williams, Bryan Sable, our Music Assistant, Sam Viggiano (who sang so beautifully at his sister’s June Ordination to the Deaconate), Kathleen Hendricks with choir in Vivaldi’s “Domine deus” from Gloria, Susan Vines and Cathie Buschek in works for Piano-four hands, Alice Lee in an aria from Bach’s St. John Passion, Chris Thompson singing an American Spiritual, and Ginnie Schaap in voice and on piccolo!
