Katie Yates in Kenya
Next month, I will travel to Kenya on a mission trip with the World Mission Initiative at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (www.worldmissioninitiative.org). This trip is in partnership with another program at the Seminary, the Metro-Urban Institute (www.pts.edu/metrourban), which addresses social justice issues in Pittsburgh and around the world. We will be learning about issues affecting women and girls in tribal areas in Kenya, including Female Genital Mutilation and child marriages, and how the local and indigenous churches are responding to these problems. We will come alongside groups such as the Samburu Girls Foundation (www.samburugirls.foundation/), which attempts to tackle these issues head-on. We will also visit the slums of Nairobi and learn more about the church’s work in that urban center. Many of you know me as the Director of Newcomer Ministry at St. Paul’s, but during the week I work for PTS as an administrative assistant for both WMI and MUI (the organizations leading this mission trip). As an employee of both programs, I am very excited for this trip, and also for the work we will do in Kenya and the relationships we will build. We will leave on Monday, June 20, and return on Sunday, July 3. I invite you to pray for our whole group as we prepare for our trip, and as we travel and meet new people. We are all looking forward to seeing how God is at work in Kenya!
Come hear about Katie's trip on July 10 during the coffee hour between services!
