SEO EXERCISE Worksheet
As a team, you all are going to put yourselves in the mind and heart of the person who is searching for your church (You must believe they are out there right now searching for you. It is now your responsibility to create the digital breadcrumbs so they can more easily find you). Visualize one of the various faces of your target demographic and put yourself into his or shoes. If this person were going to look for a church, a spiritual experience, or a specific Episcopal need, what would be the questions he or she ask Google?
- What were some of the common questions that arose with your team?
- What were the phrases or keywords that repeated themselves?
- Cross check these phrases or questions by typing them into Google or Bing.
For instance, if St. Bede’s came up with “Episcopal Church/Los Angeles/contemporary service”, would discover that a question or search sculpted out of these words would lead to an onslaught of options in the Los Angeles area (see next page). However, if they add just the single descriptive word “beach” they enter into a very specific community that is searched for on-line: those that are seeking a church near the beach, perhaps an Episcopalian, and desires a contemporary service. In fact, Google only offers 3 options. St. Bede’s could easily join that search group (see next page).
By plugging keywords and questions that describe St Bede’s into Google, their team becomes aware of the digital conversations that are happening. They are aware of the problems that are needing to be solved. The more they use this exercise with Google and Bing, the more effective they will get at making their welcome video more accessible to the general public. The key is be aware of all of your community’s keywords that align with the language being used by folks on-line.
